A Poem: She Gets Up

She is consumed with worries,

She is lost in her thoughts.

She is caught up in the moment.

Life’s ripple effects feels like all she’s got.

Something stops her.

She sits up on the edge of her bed.

Her palms pushing against the sheets.

She bends her elbow to rise,

A strength in her catches her by surprise.

She can’t give up,

so she gets up.

Her life changed in one day.

Her hope is diminishing,

Her sadness is increasing,

Her joy feels lost.

Darkness has met her,

She has been here before,

But now it’s enticing her to stay.

Her body wants to melt into the sheets.

Her tears do not want to cease.

She has a choice.

If she reaches deep, it’s there.

She has it in her,

But her thoughts continue to swirl.

Something stops her.

She sits on the edge of her bed.

Her palms pushing against the sheets.

She bends her elbow to rise,

A strength in her catches her by surprise.

She can’t give up,

so she gets up.
